Random thoughts, bulleted

  • As I was waking this morning, the folks on my bedside radio were talking about the upcoming Alamo Bowl game, to be held just down the street from my hotel on 2nd January. Even though the teams scheduled to play in that game haven’t been officially announced yet, the early word is that the teams we’ll have the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Michigan State Spartans in town. Gee, I hope that turns out to be true!
  • One of the first bits of local news I found on the Internet today was of a Bigfoot sighting over on the west side of the city. Heh. As long as he stays away from the Riverwalk…
  • I’m in the process of joining another chess club. Not that I’m particularly displeased with those in which I’m active right now, but Chess.com offers an interesting set of features. At this moment I’m playing through a “welcome game” there, something required of everyone who wants to join the club. And I’m looking around, deciding which of the many options available there I’ll explore first.
  • There’s a steady, cold rain falling right today. According to forecasts it’s supposed to be cold and wet for the next couple of days. That means Roscoe stays home. Heck, I’m fine with that. There are lots of chess games to work on, lots of comic books to organize, and a little Christmas tree to decorate.

Thank you, Horns!

[a Tx Longhorns image should appear here]

It is SO NICE to cheer for a winner!

The Notre Dame Fightin’ (?) Irish disappointed me majorly today. Again! And the San Antonio Spurs have broken my heart so often lately that I just couldn’t bring myself to follow their game tonight. (I guess the Spurs are beating – have beaten – the Wizards pretty soundly but, for cryin’ out loud, beating the NBA Wizards is like an NFL team beating the Browns, or the Lions – it’s nothing to brag about, know what I mean?)

But you Longhorns held strong, as I knew you would, (as I hoped you would!) beating the Jayhawks in an exciting football game tonight.

Sports fans like me tend to identify with our teams perhaps a but more strongly than we should for maximum psychological health. At least, that’s what the “experts” say. When y’all win, we feel great; when you lose, we’re down. The Spurs and the Irish have been doing their damnedest to push me into a deep, dark depression. But you guys, thank God, are my salvation!

Way to play, boys! Way to play!

Thinking about this weekend’s football…

…I almost feel like a traitor regarding a decision I’ve made about the NFL games on Sunday.

Deciding about the college games on Saturday is easy. My Texas Longhorns don’t play this weekend, and the TX Tech Red Raiders aren’t listed on the few local channels I can pick up with my rabbit ears, so I can simply play the games that are coming in with the strongest signal. Luckily, the Notre Dame game is on one of my most reliable channels. That’s the one I most want to see. But I’ll have the others on, too. It looks like I’ll have seven solid hours of college football to watch, assuming I’m up by 11:00 AM.

Sunday will be a full day of NFL ball, followed live via NFL Field Pass. It just so happens that the New Orleans Saints, a team I’ve really enjoyed following this season, will be playing at the same time as the Dallas Cowboys. Now, the Cowboys are my “home team,” San Antonio being thought of as the Cowboys’ second home. They hold summer camp here, etc. But… in all honesty, I haven’t enjoyed following their games nearly as much as I have the Saints’ games. So… I’ll probably follow the Saints on Sunday.

A nice thing about my NFL Field Pass membership, if I want to listen to a recorded version of the Dallas game, or any other NFL game, for that matter, I have access to it for free in the “archives.” The only issue will be finding the time to listen to it. That, and finding the desire.

Football, Latin, etc.

Another Thursday night finds me sitting at the big work table in my front room, watching live high school football on local TV, and writing, blogging, and hanging out on the Internet with Sally, my little eeepc netbook. A typical Thursday night, this, spent just the way I like.

Work on The Latin Project (TLP) that I mentioned last night went well today. Most of that time was spent looking through shelves and storage boxes in the back room, and downloading material from various places around the Internet. I was happy to find most of what I wanted, plenty enough to get me started. And I actually spent a little time working with the language itself.

Later tonight, at Midnight, Coast to Coast AM will have the monthly show with Linda Moulton Howe. I hope it’s a good one, and expect that it probably will be. She’s usually got interesting things to share.

Between the football and C2C, I might be able to get some chess work done. I’m not in time-trouble anywhere, but with as many games as I’ve got going now, it’s good to stay on top of things.

And the football-filled weekend continues. Happiness.
